Cycle from Prague to Vienna
A cycling trip highlighted by its extended forests, lush green landscapes and renowned UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Following the Greenway bike path, one of the most developed bike routes in the Czech Republic, and probably the only traffic you will come across will be other cyclists. Well... apart from a flock of sheep crossing the road maybe ;-).
This 7-day self-guided cycling trip starts in Prague, crosses Southern Bohemia and Moravia, leads you all the way to Austria and ends in Vienna, former capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Discover castles that take you back to the times of Princes and Princesses and feel the real Bohemian spirit. With daily stages of 46-68km,it’s a perfect trip for the regular cyclist.
ITINERARY
Arrival to Prague is at your own leisure. Discover the city on foot or by bicycle: we recommend you to take a guided city bike tour so you won’t miss any of the highlights or hidden corners.
Visit the famous Town Square with the Astronomical Clock and the Charles Bridge over the Vltava River.
Hop on your bike, follow the Vltava river and climb some hills before you get to Benesov with its famous Konopiste Castle. This was the former summer palace of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The assassination of this would-be king caused the start of World War I.
On two wheels you’ll enter Southern Bohemia, with its green and gentle landscapes. Visit the romantic castle of Červená Lhota, one of the largest historical complexes in the country.
Continue over the hills along lakes and ponds, to make your way to the UNESCO Renaissance town of Telc. It is considered to be the most beautiful Renaissance town in Europe!
Cycling along the remains of WWII fortresses and through the stunning nature of the Podyji National Park. While descending to the Dyje river through the Šobes vineyard, take a break for a good glass of white wine. You’ll surely be surprised by its excellent quality.
One of the highlights of the trip is the city of Mikulov. Visit the majestic castle whose origins date back as far as the Middle Ages, when the caravans traveling on the Amber Road were seeking the protection of its walls.
Before entering Austria, you can choose to take a little detour to visit the protected Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, also called 'The Garden of Europe'. The area is so big that the best way to see it is easy to guess: by bicycle.
Following what once was the ‘Iron Curtain' you will cross the border and arrive to Mistelbach in Austria, the final destination of this cycling route. Hop on the train (or keep cycling if you wish) to Vienna and enjoy this imperial city at your own pace.
