7 days on the Danube Cycle Path
Travel on the paths along the blue Danube just like the Romans, the Nibelungs and the mighty kings and emperors of the past. Discover the historical and cultural value of this ancient military and commercial route on two wheels.
Never far away from the fresh waters of the Danube, you will enjoy one of the most beautiful and popular cycling routes in Europe. For 7 days and with daily stages of 55 to 70 kilometres, on a mainly flat and well-paved terrain, it’s a perfect vacation for the casual cyclist. The route offers you plenty of possibilities to take a break, relax and enjoy.
The tour covers various districts of Upper and Lower Austria to finally end in the great metropolis of Vienna. Taste the typical local pastries, sip it’s well known light sweet cider or try the famous wines of the Buschenschank taverns in the Wachau region.
ITINERARY
The trip starts either in the baroque city of Schärding or in Passau, the city of the three rivers. The cycle path will take you across the upper Danube valley, and you will reach the town of Engelhartszell where the only Trappist monastery in Austria is located.
From here continue cycling easily along the banks of the Danube and you will find the Schlögener Slinge – where the second largest river in Europe makes a unique 180º curve, forced by the granite of the Bohemian Massif. You will have time to enjoy this phenomenon from the water, as here you will cross a part by ferry.
The road will take you to the city of Linz, a town par excellence to recharge your battery in one of its abundant restaurants.
Halfway the route you will leave the riverbed for a moment and head towards St. Florian and Enns to finish in the city of Grein – known for hosting the oldest still performing theatre in Austria.
You will leave the Upper Austria region behind to continue pedaling through the Weinviertel region, the largest wine-growing area in Austria.
When you stop at the city of Melk don't forget to look up so you don't miss its impressive monastery overlooking the Danube.
Next, you’ll reach the gentle landscapes of the Wachau region with its vineyards that are part of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity. A great place for a wine-tasting, an activity that we have included in the trip.
The final destination is the city of Vienna, where you can take a well-deserved rest at your hotel. But recover quickly so you don't miss out on anything this buzzing metropolis has to offer!
