A cycling vacation trough the Italian Salento

Slow down and discover the extreme south of Puglia on two wheels, a well-kept secret that is not yet discovered by mass tourism. Crossing the Salento by bicycle is like riding through an open-air museum. Prehistoric dolmens, Byzantine sanctuaries hidden in caves, impressive baroque cathedrals... these are just a few examples of the great cultural variety the region has to offer.

During 8 days you will explore the ‘Heel of Italy’ on quiet secondary roads along the coast and through the rural countryside. With daily stages of 29 to 61 kilometres on a mainly flat and easy terrain, you’ll have more than enough time to enjoy the true il dolce far niente. Experience the Mediterranean in its purest form.

Your self-guided trip starts in Lecce, a baroque city classified as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy. As soon as you’ve left the city behind, you will directly enter the wetlands of the Natural Reserve Le Cesine, a great place to watch migratory birds. Continue the ride to the protected oasis of the Alimini lakes, and end the day in the city of Otranto.

Discover the surroundings of this beautiful city riding through the fields full of vines and olive trees. Cycling makes hungry! Enjoy a food-tasting in a local bakery that we have included in the program for you.

Following the road along the most unspoilt coastline, you will get to Santa María de Leuca. If you are lucky, and the weather conditions allow so, you’ll be able to see all the way to the mountains of Albania and Greece. And don’t rush! You’ll have enough time to take a dip in the see here and there and relax on the most marvelous beaches.

Being a land of farmers and fisherman, an absolute highlight of the area is its renowned gastronomy. It offers a great combination of fish, seafood and local food from the farms. And… don’t forget to try the wines! Especially Negroamaro, a grape that grows almost exclusively in Salento. Wines from this grape tend to be very deep in color with a rustic character.

Once in Gallipoli you can take another day to explore the surroundings. But don’t get on your bike without having tried a typical spumone combined with a dark doppio!

In the afternoon we have included another food tasting. You’ll be tasting some delicious cheese on a local farm.

On your way back to Lecce you will ride through historic farmland, farmhouses and fortified villas from the 19th Century. Stay a few nights extra in this majestic city so you can visit everything at a slow pace.
