Active family holidays from Prague to Vienna
Gastronomic highlights for every taste: plum spread, typical Austrian pastries, Bohemian craft beer and Moravian wines. A fairy tale landscape of green forests with castles full of history and hidden legends… Now imagine you are experiencing all this on a bicycle, together with your family. Doesn’t that sound like an original and fun way to spend the holidays together?
This 8-day self-guided cycling trip starts in Prague, crosses Moravia and the Austrian border to end in Vienna, former capital of the Holy Roman Empire. With daily stages of 11-52km combined with fun activitieslike canoeing and hiking, this is a trip designed to enjoy with the whole family (we recommend an age minimum of 12 years old).
ITINERARY
The day is yours to explore Prague at your own leisure. Don’t forget to visit the famous Town Square with the Astronomical Clock and the Charles Bridge over the Vltava River. If you don’t want to miss out on anything we recommend you a guided bike tour of the city. A local guide will show you the highlights as well as the hidden corners.
The trip starts with a fun and refreshing activity. After a short transfer you will jump into a canoe/raft and enjoy the Sázava river from the water side, led by a local qualified guide. Of course, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to swim. In the afternoon you’ll take a short train ride and be transferred to Tábor, from where you’ll start biking the next day.
For the next days, cycling will be the main activity. Ride through South Bohemia, with its lush green landscapes, dotted by ponds and small lakes. Visit the romantic castle of Červená Lhota, one of the largest historical complexes in the country.
Leave the bikes aside for a day to enjoy a boat trip on Lake Vranov and visit its two majestic castles. We’ve also got some great fun at the high rope adventure park waiting for you!
Ride through the spectacular Podyji National Park, visit a uniquely-preserved Cold War fortification and discover the best wines in the region exploring an educational path through the vineyards. Choose an optional hike to the top of the Palava mountain, the only mayor hill in the area with the ruins of no less than 4 castles!
One of the highlights of the trip is the city of Mikulov. Visit the majestic castle whose origins date back as far as the Middle Ages, when the caravans traveling on the Amber Road were seeking the protection of its walls.
Before entering Austria you can explore the UNESCO protected Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, and find out why this is also called the ‘The Garden of Europe’.
Following what once was the ‘Iron Curtain' you will cross the border and arrive to Mistelbach in Austria, the final destination of the cycling route. Hop on the train to Vienna and enjoy this imperial city at your own pace.
