Description and itinerary
This 6-day self-guided bike trip It leaves Prague, crosses the Moravian region and crosses the Austrian border to end in Vienna, former capital of the Holy Roman Empire. With daily stages of 40-60km and little unevenness, it is a perfect trip for the occasional cyclist.
ITINERARY
You will reach Prague on your own where we recommend taking a guided bicycle tour of the city, to discover its hidden corners. Also enjoy the best known: the City square with its astronomical clock and Charles Bridge on the Vltava River. Take a walk through a chain of parks and get lost among Austro-Hungarian buildings where at times there is still a subtle air reminiscent of Soviet times.
The route starts at Nymburk, a city known for its basketball team, where you can arrive by train or organized transport from Prague. The first destination is Kutna Hora, whose silver mines paid for Columbus's expedition to the New World. Once there, don't forget to visit the Church of St. Barbara, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
Before getting back on the bike, and if you dare, stop for a moment in the Sedlec Ossuary: a chapel decorated in an extraordinary way with thousands of bones of more than 30.000 people.
In the afternoon you will find the small Buňkov lake, a place par excellence to rest and take a bath before reaching the town of Pardubice City. Try their famous gingerbread the next day for breakfast. It's sure to give you energy to take on the day on the bike!
La Ruta up and down a landscape of gentle hills to the city of Litomysl, where the renowned Czech composer Bedřich Smetana was born and whose castle was classified as Heritage of humanity by unesco.
Cycle through Polička and try a pint of pivo in his brewery before arriving at Brno. The capital of the South Moravian region is known for its functionalist architecture such as the Villa Tugendhat by the architect Mies Van der Rohe, a true masterpiece.
Without a doubt one of the places that stands out the most on this trip is the fairytale city Mikulov, with its majestic castle whose origins date back to medieval times, when caravans traveling along the Amber Route sought refuge within its walls.
Continuing through what was once 'The Iron Curtain' you will cross the border to reach mistletoe stream in Austria, final destination of the bicycle tour. You can choose to continue cycling to Vienna, or arrive by train to the imperial city of the Danube.
