This 11-day self-guided bicycle trip It follows almost entirely the Elba River stream, crosses the Saxon pine forests and the Potsdam lake area. With daily stages of 38 to 60km with very little climbing, it's a route designed for the regular cyclist.
ITINERARY
The first section will take you through an important wine growing region until you reach the town of Melnik, built on a hill high above the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe rivers.
You'll continue following the Elbe riverbanks without losing the Rip mountain out of sight. According to the legend, this hill of volcanic origin is where the first Czechs settled many centuries ago.
Before entering Germany, your cycling path follows an ancient trade route which connected the Czech and the Saxon kingdoms back in the days. You'll pass by medieval castles, fortresses and ruins of the WWII and the marvelous Swiss Bohemian National Park.
Once you've crossed the border you will arrive to Dresden, a buzzing city with a great offer of monuments and museums to visit.
Biking along the Elbe in Saxony is like a fairytale trip to romantic times. The city of Meißen, famous for its porcelain production since the 18th century, is your next stop.
Ride on to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Wittenberg,. Cradle of Lutheranism and the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, it is an idyllic city that is well worth visiting.
Leaving the Elbe behind, you will enter an area of dense green pine forests, until you reach the open lake landscapes of Potsdam. From this important bourgeois city, known for hosting the former residence of the Pruisian kings, you can hop on a train to Berlin. We recommend you to book a few extra nights so you can visit the best the city has to offer without any rush.
