The Villa of a Thousand and One Shields

Cáceres is one of our World Heritage cities and is home to a privileged monumental complex that is unique in Spain and Europe. Walking through its narrow cobbled streets is like travelling back in time. The walled enclosure contains the most important collection of civil and religious architecture of the Spanish Renaissance. It has also been preserved almost intact. A large part of the civil and religious buildings that make up the old town of Cáceres date from the end of the 14th century and from the renovations and extensions carried out during the 15th and 16th centuries.

A city that is a real luxury, we all know that, right? What many fewer people know is that Cáceres is also the largest municipality in Spain, more than 1.750 square kilometres, almost as big as the entire province of Guipúzcoa!!

In Extremadura, there are many interesting wonders: the Salor River, oak pastures and cattle trails with all their associated natural and cultural heritage. The Sierra de la Mosca, a small Monfragüe in the municipality of Cáceres. Storks and megalithic remains.

Nearby, an unexpected surprise, the Natural Monument of Barruecos, a unique, singular landscape. Large masses of granite that have been progressively degraded over millions of years to give rise to globular monolithic shapes known as bolos. Sculptures shaped by the hand of nature, such as the Seta or the Peñas del Tesoro, which could easily be in any modern art museum in the world.

We can visit all of these things by pedaling, enjoying the city and its surroundings on a fantastic bicycle getaway.

Our accommodation is located a step away from the historic center of the city of Cáceres, it is the Grand Hotel Don Manuel. Excellent location and magnificent hotel. We have also booked our rooms to take a shower and change on Sunday before starting our return trip.
