the-charm-of-romania-bicycle-holidays (6)Romania It is a close country and, at the same time, very unknown. In Spain we live with a million Romanians. But what do we know about your country? How many Romanian cities would we be able to mention? What do we know about its eventful history beyond the abrupt end of the Ceaucescu dictatorship? How many places do we know in Romania that are worth a visit?

Its culture and language are a mix of the Mediterranean and the Eastern world. Its nature, a set of places of captivating beauty, where many natural spaces are well preserved.

To talk about Romania is to talk about a complex history, of myths such as that of Count Dracula and more recent events that shook European history.

The Romanian heritage is very unknown, at least seven sites or monuments belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its capital, Bucharest, little by little recovers its splendor of yesteryear and French influence. The downtown streets are always lively. We are in a peaceful and very safe country, ideal for enjoying the outdoors anywhere and in every way.

Touring the country means entering places of great natural beauty and discovering proudly preserved trades, traditions and customs in its rural world.

Exuberant nature to discover.

The Black Sea coasts with their tourist resorts from the communist era are recovering and beginning to offer great vacations in beautiful surroundings. The Danube delta, that great European river that cyclists love so much, is a first-rate natural area. The Carpathians divide the country in two, their mountains will delight cyclists and hikers and are practically unknown outside of Romania.

Gastronomy

Romanian cuisine, in which multiple and disparate influences come together, is a reflection of other manifestations of the life of this great country, a crossroads of very diverse cultures and traditions. Romanian cuisine undoubtedly has Balkan origins, although it has been clearly influenced by Russian and Turkish cuisines, the echoes of Western gastronomy, especially Hungarian and French, and the great variety of local products, derived from the fertility of this land

The pastries reflect the same influences, highlighting the puff pastries, whether Turkish or German style.

The typical drink of Romania, and also the favorite of Romanians, is Tuica, a plum brandy that is drunk mainly as an aperitif. Romanian beer is an appreciated drink, but the country's true pride is its wines, a wide selection excellent for its variety and quality. The traditional cultivation of vines in Romania dates back to the time of the Dacians, and since then it has preserved a native strain that produces a white wine called feteasca.

All this encouraged us to propose a bike trip through Romania.

Our bike trip through Transylvania

Romania MapOur week of bicycle travel will allow us to learn and understand, calmly, the heritage of Transylvania, an interesting and surprising mix of different influences.

Transylvania (the land beyond the forest) is a multicultural space where different nations that speak different languages, with different customs and traditions have coexisted for centuries, which enhance the beauty and charm of the area. Multiculturalism has made it possible to preserve remains of different civilizations to this day. Transylvania covers the entire central area of Romania, a hollow surrounded by hills and mountains, the Carpathians.

It is by far the most romantic Romanian province.

Located in the heart of Romania, Transylvania has a relief that goes from the hills and lakes in the north to the forested valleys in the south. Mountains linked by time, crystalline streams, dense forests, wooden churches, legendary castles,… the memories of a history full of events. On our way we will find many interesting places: winter sports resorts, trails, national and natural parks, fascinating medieval cities, art museums and quality accommodation and gastronomy.

Some of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe are located here, such as Brasov, our end of the trip, whose old town looks like a small town, with beautiful buildings that treasure centuries of history, cobblestone streets and baroque squares, closed areas to traffic in which it is worth walking aimlessly.
