Pantheon of the Fernan Nuñez Madrid (2)The county of Barajas fell to the Fernán Núñez family and after the dissolution of the Zapata lineage in the first third of the 19th century. We already know the importance of family and we have visited the Fernán Núñez Palace on Santa Isabel Street. His name also appears on the Paseo de Fernán Núñez in retirement from the Cuesta de Moyano to the Statue of the Fallen Angel. Today we will look again at this family, specifically at the Pantheon of Fernán Núñez located in the Alameda de Osuna. It is located on a promontory between Manuel Aguilar Muñoz and Joaquín Ibarra streets, next to the Castle of the Alameda.

It seems that the decision to build the mausoleum was made after the death, at just seventeen years old, of Isabel Falcó y Osorio, on May 8, 1875. The third duchess chose to erect the pantheon to house the remains of her daughter and commissioned the project to Francisco de Cubas y González, Marquis of Cubas. The work was carried out in 1879.

Finally it served for the burial of family members and his father was also buried here in 1892 and his mother the duchess in 1921 and the rest of the dukes of Fernán Núñez.

At the entrance we can see a pointed arch, a sign of the neo-Gothic style of the construction, above it are the ducal shield, a belfry with a bell and a cross, which is the only exterior decoration.

The chapel has a rectangular floor plan, on top of which rises a cross vault, covered on the outside by a gable roof, divided into three sections to which is added another that serves as the sacristy, located behind the main altar. In this space there is a staircase through which you have access to the crypt, located under the nave.

The interior is also quite sober, with four large mausoleums standing out, two arranged on each side of the nave under the holes in the vault. They are the work of the sculptor Elías Martín Riesco who also worked on other occasions for the dukes.

The entire complex is surrounded by a brick and stone wall, the stone came from the castle that was used as a quarry, both here and in the nearby Parque del Capricho.

One more excuse, if we needed one, to come visit all the attractions of the Alameda de Osuna.

A abrazo.
