Calderon de la Barca Statue (2)The sculptor Juan Figueras y Vila He created the statue of Calderón de la Barca in white marble. Inaugurated in 1880, it is located in the Plaza de Santa Ana in front of Queen Victoria Hotel, is one of the few statues in Madrid that we could call sedentary, since its origins it has always been in the same location, something unusual in our city where it is common for statues to be “nomadic”. In this secluded square in Madrid we can see the playwright, dressed in the habit of the Order of Santiago, with the cross hanging from a medallion on his chest.

Figueras represented him with a book between his left hand and knee and sitting in a meditative pose. Behind him, a winged female figure with a mask, a symbol of theater. The sides are adorned with high reliefs of children representing different literary genres: on the right comedy and tragedy, on the left poetry and war. On the pedestal bronze reliefs alluding to his theatrical works. On the front that faces the Spanish theater, a simple bronze inscription: CALDERÓN DE LA BARCA.

The brilliant poet and playwright of the Spanish Golden Age lived in Madrid (remember that we already visited the House of Calderón de la Barca in our 365 days in Madrid) between 1600 and 1681. He premiered a large part of his plays in the comedy corrals in the center of Madrid, specifically in the prince's corral, today our Spanish Theater.

A abrazo.
