Madrid has various examples of modernist buildings. In this residential building on Alcalá street number 121, The architect maintains a balance between the abundance of ornamentation and the more conservative forms of modernist architecture. The author, Julio Martínez-Zapata Rodríguez, which has left us many buildings in Madrid, allows few decorative elements, but does not renounce floral elements at the beginnings and ends of the pilasters that it has along some intervals. The location of the building itself was reason enough to do a large work, on the corner and at the confluence of two of the most important streets in the Salmanca neighborhood.
It is worth highlighting the plasticity of the viewpoints and especially daring is the conception of the tower and the dome that crowns it, toothed, which creates an effect of radical asymmetry, with slopes to the two streets, Alcalá and Príncipe de Vergara. This building, built between 1908 and 1909, conceived as luxury homes, received an award in 1910 in the annual competition called by the Madrid City Council to reward the best-built properties, the same one that a few years later would receive another relevant work by the Madrid Modernism: Gallardo House.
A abrazo.
