Greenways in Spain
At Rutas Pangea we organize many trips along Green Routes.
We have been doing this for years and we think it is a great way to get started in the world of bike travel.
Generally, they are easy routes, although sometimes there are surprises: a tunnel that could not be recovered, a missing bridge...
In these cases the gentle slope may change and things get a little more complicated, but they are the exception.
Following the Vías Verdes label, the usual routes are with little gradient and good surface.
We have a special connection with the Greenways. The programme was launched by the Spanish Railways Foundation in 1993, the same year we started.
There we went to introduce ourselves, as what we were, a few kids (it's been a while since then, now) who were starting to organize bike trips to take groups and who had already done some tours along those abandoned railway lines on what would later become the Vías Verdes de la Jara and del Tajuña.
Since that first visit, the relationship has been constant, collaborations of all kinds, trips, congresses, conferences, European projects…
We have seen the project grow. How the map of Spain's Greenways changed, which at the beginning was more an image of what could be achieved than a reality.
Then, it was a map of Spain with some green noodles spread across the territory.
Today, some good spaghetti has been added to those noodles, long-distance routes such as Black eyes, the Oil, Plazaola, Zafan Valley or Santander-Mediterranean.
In this growth we must recognize the great involvement of another program, that of nature trails from the Ministry of Agriculture. But that's for another post.
Greenways are growing, in kilometers and in services, and are becoming better and better.
And the essence remains, they are paths that tell stories to anyone who goes with the desire to be surprised.
We recommend the Greenways websiteAlways up to date and with more than 3000 kilometres of routes at your disposal.
