Santander Mediterranean Greenway through the Jiloca Valley

The recovery of a dream

In 1920, the councils of Burgos, Santander, Soria, and Zaragoza championed the Santander-Mediterranean railway project, with the construction of the Ontaneda-Calatayud section, joining in the north with the section to Astillero and in the south with the Calatayud-Calatayud line. Between 1927 and 1930, the section from Calatayud to the Cidad-Dosante station in Burgos, near Santelices, was built. The connection with Santander was left uncompleted, with 35 km to go. Of this section, the La Engaña tunnel stands out, 6.976 meters long, whose drilling was completed in 1959, being at its time the longest railway tunnel in Spain, although it was never crossed by any train. Caminos Naturales continues to recover this fantastic route that promises to connect an important part of the Iberian Peninsula and many of its great routes such as the Camino de Santiago Francés, the Eurovelos 1, 3, 8 and the future Eurovelo 16, the Ibérica, the Camino del Cid, Empty Mountains and many others that I'm sure I left out. Taking advantage of the new recovered sections, we are going to travel through Aragonese lands from the town of Ojos Negros (which gives its name to the Greenway that reaches Sagunto) to Daroca in the first instance and then continue to Calatayud.

A weekend through Tierras del Jiloca and the Blancas moors, a route full of history, with so much accumulated past that it surprises those who do not know the territory. One more of those areas of Empty Spain that you already know we usually find full of life and charm.

In short, two days to enjoy the landscape and history pedaling an easy itinerary, recovered as Green Way within the program nature trails.
