Smuggling: a hidden story in the Pyrenees
For centuries, smuggling was one of the most deeply rooted activities in this border area with France. The black market and cunning of the people of Baztan marked the trade, economy and way of life of the region. On this route, you will not only cycle through dreamlike landscapes, but you will also discover the stories of those who, with ingenuity and courage, challenged the vague boundaries of legality in order to survive.
A journey between nature and tradition
The route runs through, among other places, the Bertiz Natural Park, a natural gem where biodiversity is the main protagonist. The lush beech and oak groves create a magical environment, ideal for a cycling getaway. Trails, generally with good surface, allow you to enjoy the landscape without rushing, making stops at natural viewpoints and beautiful villages.
Charming accommodation: rest at the Orbela Hostel
To complete the experience, the main accommodation will be the Orbela Hostel, located in the quiet town of Beintza-LabaienIdoia, Beñat and Mike, the family in charge of the hostel, are already part of our own family. Rutas Pangea is with them as if it were at home and will follow them wherever they open their doors. It seems that we have managed to get an extra summer, it seems that it will be the last one.
A welcoming space, which has been hosting our groups for years, perfect for relaxing after a day of pedalling, with all the necessary amenities for bicycle lovers.
