Description
Montes Obarenes and San Zadornil by bike
Cycle through gorges, fortresses and forests in northern Burgos
Between the Meseta Central plateau and the Ebro Valley lies a natural border that for centuries separated—and united—two worlds: the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. This place is the Pancorbo Gorge and the Obarenes Mountains, a rugged, verdant, and breathtaking landscape that we will explore on this guided bicycle tour.
Here, forests cling to limestone cliffs, paths wind through cattle-grazing valleys, and villages perch on impossible slopes. A transitional landscape that combines military history, rural heritage, and well-preserved nature.
We will cycle through the Montes Obarenes–San Zadornil Natural Park, between Burgos and Álava, discovering a territory that is not overcrowded, ideal for quiet cycle tourism, but with character.
A border territory: history and geology on the bicycle
The Pancorbo gorge has been a strategic passage since Roman times. Armies, merchants, and travelers passed through here, and that is why even today we find fortifications, small castles, and defensive remains that recall its historical importance.
The Obarenes Mountains line divides the Ebro valley from the La Bureba countryside, creating an abrupt relief of limestone ridges, narrow natural passes and wide panoramas open to the horizon.
On this trip we combine almost forgotten but well-preserved rural paths, historical sections linked to Napoleonic wars, natural viewpoints over the Pancorbo pass and forests and mountains of the Natural Park, all linked by tracks and secondary roads perfect for enjoying leisurely cycling.
Stages of the journey
Campo de La Bureba and Estrechos de Pancorbo
41 km · 650 m elevation gain
From the Zuñeda area we enter the open landscape of the La Bureba countryside, visiting the Castillete fortification and an old fort from the Napoleonic Wars.
The day's journey takes us through Valle Hermoso to the Pancorbo Pass viewpoint, where the strategic and geological significance of this natural corridor becomes clear. A well-balanced stage, with manageable elevation changes and stunning views.
San Zadornil and the Ebro Valley
52 km · 850 m elevation gain
We entered the Montes Obarenes–San Zadornil Natural Park, cycling through forests and small rural villages.
We visited Santa María de Obarenes and connected with the GR-99, the Ebro Natural Path, following the course of the river in a transitional environment between mountain and valley.
It is the most complete stage of the journey: nature, heritage and vast landscapes.
Obarenes Mountains Natural Park
36 km · 750 m elevation gain
Circular route through the heart of the natural park passing through Ameyugo, Bugedo, Peñalengua, Cellorigo and Forcea, ascending to Alto de Baragón.
A day that combines forest tracks, small mountain villages and limestone ridges with spectacular panoramic views over the Ebro valley.
Landscapes that change every kilometer
The Obarenes Mountains are not high mountains, but they are a territory of character: limestone cliffs that rise above the valleys, well-preserved forests, large livestock areas and villages perched on slopes with open views towards the Ebro valley.
It is no coincidence that in local tourism promotion they refer to this environment as the “New York of the Woods”The expression refers to the spectacular verticality of its limestone ridges and cliffs, which emerge above a green sea of beech and holm oak forests, creating a profile that is as recognizable as it is surprising.
It is a bucolic yet striking landscape, ideal for those seeking authentic nature, marked relief and uncrowded territory to enjoy by bicycle.
Accommodations
Hotel *** El Molino de Pancorbo
We slept at the Hotel El Molino de Pancorbo, located in the narrow gorge, which allows us to enjoy both the surroundings of the Ebro valley and the countryside of La Bureba.
Comfortable and well-located accommodation to rest after each stage and continue discovering the territory from a strategic point.
A trip for those who enjoy the territory at a leisurely pace.
This guided bike tour through the Obarenes Mountains and San Zadornil is designed for people who enjoy varied and uncrowded landscapes, value the history and context of the territory, and prefer to forget about logistics and focus on pedaling.
As always at Rutas Pangea, we combine organization, support and the community spirit that has defined us since 1993.
A border journey. A journey of transition. Of landscape and memory. And, of course, by bicycle.
