Description and itinerary
| From the Costa Brava to the Pyrenees, a huge variety of landscapes full of history and culture. |
Thanks to its climate, its extensive network of quiet roads and its numerous climbs combined with flat terrain, Girona has become one of the places chosen for cycling by cyclists from all over the world. The city itself has a very pleasant cycling atmosphere.
Of course, it is also a great area for cycling tourism, where you can cycle along the Girona Greenways (former railway) cycle path. This line takes you from Olot in the Pyrenees to Sant Feliu de Guixols on the Costa Brava. Always downhill, it has become a very popular route, as has the Empordà plain. Travelling along its quiet roads, the great diversity of landscapes and visiting interesting cultural and historical sites is a great pleasure.
This week's itinerary takes you to the Empordà, one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate and soil, the mountains surrounding the plain are perfect terrain for producing grapes. The area's former farmers decided to use the plains to plant olive trees and the hillsides to plant vines, on terraces separated by dry stone walls. Since 2005, the influential wine guru Robert Parker put the Empordà on the world map for wine production. Thanks to the hard work of the wineries, this area has been certified as Denominación de Origen Empordà.
The tour offers guided visits to wineries or tasting menus in Michelin-starred restaurants, and many more visits to places of culinary interest, such as museums of fishing history, cork production for wine stoppers, etc.
