If you fancy taking a bike tour around the The lesser known Danube, you have an excellent option to cycle for a week along the young Danube, exploring Europe's longest river on the stretch between its source, in Donaueschingen, and the city of Donauwörth.
Less well-known than other stretches of the river, the young Danube led Claude Magris to the river's sources to write his famous "The Danube."
I always think Magris would recommend the source of the Danube more.
It is perhaps not as easy a trip as Passau-Vienna, for two reasons:
Getting to Donaueschingen in the Black Forest isn't easy, but the effort is well worth it.
The river must cross the Swabian Jura, a low mountain range that Germany shares with Switzerland and France. Our Danube opens a narrow valley flanked by almost vertical walls covered in coniferous forests that form the heart of the Upper Danube Nature Park.
Sometimes we'll have a hard time tackling some of the slopes, but nothing beyond your reach, of course.
In return for these challenges, the rewards are incredible: far fewer people than on the more popular stretches of the Danube, a photo at the source of the Danube, views of Gutenstein Castle and Sigmaringen Castle and the river cliffs, the port and Ulm Cathedral (Einstein's city)...
