Cycling trip from Cuenca to Vinaròs: The Route of the Iberian Guerrillas
There are territories that are not crossed, but listened to. The Iberian System is one of them. It is not a friendly mountain range; it is a world of limestone peaks, impossible ravines, and a silence that, at times, feels almost tangible.
For centuries, these forests were the last refuge. First for retreating armies, then for Carlist bands, and finally for the Levante and Aragon Guerrilla Group (AGLA). Today, we travel those same paths by bicycle. Not just for sport, but as a way of traveling based on sensations and memories.
An author's journey through the silenced history of the Iberian System
This is not your average cycling tour. It's an 8-day journey designed by two expert guides from Rutas Pangea: Javi and Juan, who know every abandoned farmhouse and every strategic route used by the Maquis. We crossed the so-called "Spanish Lapland", one of the least densely populated areas in Europe (less than 2 inhabitants/km²), where self-sufficiency and respect for the environment are the rules of the road.
We crossed the Serranía de Cuenca, the Alto Tajo, the Maestrazgo region of Teruel and the Ports de Beceite before feeling the salt air of the Mediterranean in Vinaroz.
Is it advisable to do this cycling route in August?
Absolutely, but with some caveats. The route takes you through the cool, fresh air of the eastern forests, but you need to be very careful, always carry plenty of water, stay hydrated, and don't forget your sunscreen. The support vehicle accompanying the trip will be a constant help with both of these things.
The coolness of the forests and the altitude
Unlike the plains, here we always cycle at over 1.000 meters altitude and close to 1.900 meters altitude on some occasions. This gives us pleasant temperatures during the day under the shade of black pines and junipers, although the nights in the mountains can be cool even in the middle of summer.
Physical demands and terrain type
It's a journey difficultIt's not an endless mountain pass, but there are no flat sections either; it's a constant leg-breaker. The elevation changes are relentless, especially in the Maestrazgo stages, with days exceeding 1.000 meters of accumulated ascent. The route combines forest tracks, old shepherd's paths and sections of secondary asphalt with no traffic.
