Description and itinerary
The Sanabrés Way stands out for its less crowded nature, its authenticity, and its contrasting landscapes.
From the heights of A Gudiña to the forests of Lalín, you'll experience a challenging but unforgettable journey, culminating in the Plaza del Obradoiro in front of Santiago Cathedral.
The origin of this path as a viable route to the Apostle's tomb It goes hand in hand with the Silver Route, which ascended from southern Spain, and a whole series of small pilgrimages or processions towards a dense network of monasteries that arose from the Mozarabic repopulation and were located in the province of Zamora.
Just four kilometers from the Roman road near Granja de Moreruela lies the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Moreruela. It is the oldest in Spain and was known as Santiago de Moreruela until 1163. The pilgrim's gate and fountain can still be admired among its ruins. In Tábara, 25 kilometers from Moreruela, the Mozarabic monastery of San Salvador existed before 1137. The same is true of Santa Marta de Tera, a town that grew up around the abbey of Santa Marta de Riba de Tera. Also in Rionegro del Puente, at the foot of the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Carballeda, the Cofradía de los Falifos (Brotherhood of the Falifos) was founded. This brotherhood, still active today, owns the town's current pilgrim hostel and is dedicated to "the repair of bad roads for the comfort of the poor pilgrims who travel to Compostela to visit the temple of the Apostle James."
