El Portuguese Way In a few years it has become the most traveled Camino de Santiago after the French Way.
No wonder, it is an unforgettable experience. The route runs of countries with the diversity that this entails, languages, shared history, especially rich, always in those border territories that make up the line, without forgetting the architecture, nor of course the gastronomy, which is still edible culture.
If you choose this path you will enjoy the cuisine, the landscape and the scenery of northern Portugal and Galicia, in an environment always dotted by the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. From the beginning in Porto, that beautiful city overlooking the Douro River, Viana do Castelo, Vigo or Pontevedra, a city that has become an example in the world, recovering its medieval center for pedestrians and removing traffic from the city center. .
Arrival in Santiago de Compostela is always a special moment, taking that photo from the stairs of the Plaza del Obradoiro with the Cathedral in the background and sending it to your people is a feeling that you never forget. Don't be alarmed if at that very moment you are already thinking about your next Camino de Santiago, it is normal. It doesn't just happen to you.
The reasons for the popularity of the Portuguese Camino de Santiago along the coast are several, the attractiveness of the coastline, a friendly terrain and some towns and cities along the Camino with many services and much to visit.
The Portuguese section is flat, you will pedal most of the time on secondary roads, some bike paths and seafront promenades. In Galicia, the relief becomes more undulating, and the runners They become your Path through the bisques.
From the beginning in Porto, a cosmopolitan city, declared World Heritage with its bridges and wineries. Visit the cathedral and the Clérigos Tower and, above all, stroll through its streets. I wouldn't miss a visit to the Livraria Lello and Irmão, although now you have to pay an entrance fee for the visit. It's worth it. To regain strength we recommend the cod and francesinha, and, of course, Port wines, which are not all sweet or dessert.
You will begin your trip bordering the majestic mouth of the Duero River until you reach the Atlantic Ocean, following the picturesque coastline. On your way, you will pass through charming towns such as Matosinhos, Lavra and Azurara. Let yourself be amazed by the impressive Portuguese beaches and its promenades as you cross the Ave River in Vila do Conde.
From Póvoa de Varzim, you will continue cycling along the Portuguese coast until you reach Esposende. Discover the vast fields of crops, the characteristic paved roads and the uniqueness of the Portuguese rural environment. Upon reaching Viana do Castelo, a traditional seafaring city guarded by the ocean and the mouth of the Lima River, be sure to tour its historic center and visit the emblematic Praça da República, the heart of the city.
The route will take you through numerous charming villages and small towns such as Vila Praia de Âncora, with its impressive Fuerte da Lagarteira. From Caminha, a picturesque town, you can glimpse Spain and the mouth of the Miño River, the longest in Galicia. You will cross the Miño by ferry to reach A Guarda, famous for the Castro de Santa Tecla, a pre-Roman archaeological site from the 1st century BC.
In A Guarda, you will have left Portugal behind to continue your journey through Spain. A cycle path will take you to Oia, where you can admire the imposing Monastery of Santa María de Oia. From there, you will continue to Baiona, whose port was the first witness to the discovery of the New World. Don't leave Baiona without exploring its charming historic center and visiting its impressive Parador, with spectacular views of the Atlantic.
The Ría de Vigo will accompany you on your trip, offering you views of the mussel rafts and the famous Rande Bridge. You will continue to Arcade, where you can taste its famous oysters, a true delicacy from the sea! Your next destination will be Pontevedra, a city that seems frozen in time and is the gateway to the Camino in the interior.
From Pontevedra, you will advance towards Santiago de Compostela, pedaling through meadows and crop fields. You will pass through towns such as Caldas de Reis, known for its thermal waters, and Pontecesures. The stage will end in Padrón, famous for its peppers with Designation of Origin and for being the place where, according to legend, the remains of the Apostle Santiago arrived.
Starting from Padrón, you will cross native forests, pastures and fields until you reach your goal. Your trip will culminate in the emblematic Plaza del Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela, where you can admire the majestic façade of the Cathedral. Enjoy the music of the bagpipes and collect your well-deserved Compostela, celebrating the end of this extraordinary adventure along the Portuguese Coastal Camino de Santiago.
