The program Spain Tourism Experiences, driven by the State Secretariat for Tourism, is demonstrating enormous potential to transform destinations and activate new, more sustainable travel models.
Their commitment to cycle tourism and greenways is not accidental: they have understood that these old railway lines are a second chance for many territories, and that turning them into well-designed cycle tourism experiences generates a real impact on the local economy, retains population and attracts a respectful and curious traveler.
Projects like Experience Greenways They are proof that, when public funding is combined with proposals that bring together passion, vision and creativity, the territory moves again.
With that idea, Experimenta Vías Verdes was born, a laboratory to imagine what the Greenways of the future could be like, to consolidate the work of many years and more. And we, at Rutas Pangea, knew from the very beginning that we wanted to be involved.
The story: what happens when you combine territory, work, creativity and a lot of cycling.
For 15 months, public administrations, professionals, technicians and companies in the sector sat down to think, debate and prototype.
Because yes, this project wasn't about reports that get stored in a drawer, but about ideas that are tested, reviewed, and put into action.
The starting question?
How to make Greenways true engines of cycle tourism in Spain, living spaces that invite you to travel, discover and return.
And there, amidst many meetings, encounters, maps, routes, and presentations, something obvious emerged:
Greenways have enormous potential. We already knew that, but they need to be better communicated. They need more promotion, more innovation, and more experiences designed for travelers who want to cycle at a leisurely pace, enjoying the heritage, nature, and local cuisine.
Second life for territories that missed a train: cycle tourism as an engine
The problem is clear: cycle tourism is growing, some Greenways are successful models, but many others remain underutilized, invisible to those who could fall in love with them.
The promise also: we have great examples that show us the way forward: Vies Verdes de Girona, Vía Verde de la Sierra, Vía Verde del Aceite or the Vía Verde de Ojos Negros.
When well-designed cycling tourism experiences are created, promoted, and when the traveler is taken into account, magic happens.
And the project itself provides the proof.
The Experimenta Vías Verdes project has enabled the use of public funds for the collaborative work of a diverse group: public administration, associations, and companies; coordinated by the Spanish Railways Foundation. An exceptional team of experts in tourism, cycle tourism, accessibility, and tourist destination management.
Ultimately, we understand that this is an institutional recognition that cycle tourism matters, and that to develop it we need those who have been working on this for decades.
That's where Rutas Pangea has a lot to offer: we've been promoting cycling travel in Spain and abroad for over 30 years. We've seen how cycle tourism transforms regions, revitalizes towns, creates jobs, and connects people. Moreover, we've been part of that transformation.
That's why being part of a project like this wasn't just a source of pride for us, it's a responsibility. We want the Greenways to be more than just traveled; we want them to be experienced, and for many more people to be able to make a living from them.
If you've gotten this far, it's perhaps because you share the same concern:
How can we get more people to discover cycle tourism on the Greenways?
At Rutas Pangea we have it clear:
— With better experiences.
— With honest and personal promotion.
— With routes designed to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
— And with serious projects that have public funding and expert teams behind them.
And that is precisely the spirit of our work every day.
This has led us, within the framework of the Experimenta Vías Verdes project, to launch an incredible product: The Grand Tour of Spanish Greenways.
But there's much more. If you want to discover routes along greenways, cycling getaways, and ways to experience these paths in a different way, here's our updated selection:
Explore our routes and trips on Greenways
Because in the end, that's what it's about, not covering kilometers... but pedaling through stories.
