Torrespaña_el_PiruliTorrespaña It has a height of 220 meters, 232 meters with the communications antenna. The 232 meters of Pirulí, you know, in Madrid we love to rename things. If you ask about Torrespaña, you will surely be surprised, many people will not know what you are talking about. Most of us know it as the Pirulí.

It stands next to the M30 and O'Donnell, standing like a solitary lighthouse. One of the most recognizable points of the Madrid skyline.

Construction began on February 17, 1981, and in just 13 months it was ready. Less than a year!! and the architect's plans Emilio Martínez de Velasco had become a reality and Torrespaña was prepared to fulfill a double objective: guarantee coverage of the 1982 Soccer World Cup and expand the reach of the radio and television signal in the Community of Madrid.

Torrespaña was until 2007 the tallest tower in Madrid. That year it was surpassed by three of the four Towers Business Area.

There are no sets here, nor are programs recorded. Now it fulfills two basic functions, it is the main television and radio broadcasting center in Madrid and it is the nodal center from which the programs are distributed to the rest of Spain.

Unfortunately for us you cannot visit a work center. We can't take that elevator that goes up 120 meters in 2,5 minutes. Nor climb its spiral staircase with 1208 steps. So we look with envy at the Fernsehturm, The Alexanderplatz Tower in Berlin, the imposing Berlin tower that reaches 368 meters, which was a symbol of the city's Soviet power.

From what the lucky ones who have seen Madrid from above say, the views are incredible, you can see the planes take off from Barajas and Madrid looks like a model.

We will settle for continuing to enjoy its silhouette, our Pirulí, one of the symbols of Madrid.

A abrazo.
