T4 Adolfo Suarez Airport (6)Madrid airport, our Barajas airport, which since March 26, 2014 has been renamed Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, in honor of the late president of the government, Adolfo Suarez, opened its doors in 1933.

Since then it has not stopped growing and has been expanded several times. The most significant in 1997, Aena He called a competition and the British architect's proposal won. Richard Rogers in collaboration with Madrid Lamella Studio, the fruit T4.

It is a magnificent example of the High Tech architecture, characteristic of the architect Richard Rogers. A style with a strong technical expression, where forms adapt to function, the structure remains visible and glass is a dominant material. A conception of the building is reflected as if it were a machine and a special interest in clear and transparent architecture. In his work, his versatility stands out to accommodate the demands of users and create utilitarian spaces.

The new terminal came into operation at the beginning of 2006.
The project plan has a main building and another satellite, two new runways, parking areas, a train that connects the main building and the satellite.
The building is organized in modules, with an undulating roof that has a series of skylights that allow access to natural light, a great achievement that makes the terminal very pleasant. The cover is made with a metal structure, covered on the inside in bamboo. The structure is supported by beams with sinuous contours, supported by V-shaped pillars, with certain organic reminiscences, which stand on concrete bases.
The glass façade is furrowed by tensioners that tighten the roof. Zoning was achieved through the use of differentiated colors on the columns that support the roof, identifying the various spaces and different areas of the Terminal.

The criteria of simplicity, economy and flexibility were key in the development of the project, the aim was to reduce the environmental impact, reduce energy consumption and reduce the emission of polluting gases. Not in vain, they are a constant in Rogers' work, his defense of energy performance and sustainability have left their mark on the profession.

Richard Rogers was awarded the Pritzker prize in 2007. This award is considered the Nobel Prize for Architecture.

In this summer season when the number of our trips increases, perhaps some of them pass through T4, we hope you will look at it with different eyes.

By the way, at the same time as this expansion was made, public transport communications to the airport were improved, the metro arrived and also the commuter train. The latter is the cheapest option to get from the center of Madrid to the airport.

A abrazo.
