The hermitage was a meeting place for Galician and Basque washerwomen who washed on the banks of the river. It is very interesting to read Arturo Barea talk about the hermitage and its surroundings in La Forja de un Rebelde.
The Garden of Departure. Here farmland was plowed and created in the 1559th century. A fruit and vegetable farm on the Vargas family farm. This farm was located next to the river, far from the town center. In XNUMX, King Philip II began the process to take over the property, Casa Vargas, which ended up becoming the Casa de Campo.
At the northern end of the Madrid Río we find the Queen Victoria Bridge. It was inaugurated on June 13, 1909, coinciding with the festival of San Antonio de Paula. The inauguration was presided over by Kings Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia, in honor of the queen it was named Queen Victoria Bridge.
The hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida holds a surprise for us, the grandiose pictorial group that Goya painted at the end of the 18th century. A masterpiece of Spanish art.
Rivers have always been means of communication, they have structured the landscape and that is what Madrid Río has achieved, recovering the Manzanares as the backbone.
The Segovia Bridge is the oldest bridge preserved in Madrid. Originally it was part of the Madrid beautification program promoted by Philip II after converting Madrid into the capital of his kingdom.
Today we are going to refer to the Toledo Bridge, in our opinion one of the most beautiful bridges in Madrid. It is in the Churrigueresque baroque style and was built between 1718 and 1732 by the architect Pedro de Ribera across the Manzanares River.
The bridge is designed as a monument in itself so that it captures the attention of passers-by, and becomes one of the emblematic images of Madrid Río. Its nighttime image is especially attractive, thanks to the luminaires that illuminate it from below and the 32 streetlights inside.
Within our bike excursions through the city of Madrid we continue looking in more detail at the nature of our city. This tour is focused on birds. Madrid, due to its location in the center of the Peninsula, is a transit and meeting place for much of our winged fauna and Manzanares is one of its main communication routes to move from one place to another. It is now, in the fall and winter, when we can observe more species of birds within the city itself. The cranes that go looking for the south and the acorns, seagulls that go up the Tagus from the Atlantic and many more species that always bring us surprises.
