La Jara Greenway (Toledo) is a route full of history and environmental values. It was a railway line that sought to bring Madrid closer to Badajoz, for this reason it was chosen to draw a new line that linked Talavera de la Reina with Villanueva de la Serena (Badajoz). During the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the works began and continued during the Second Republic. The Civil War paralyzed the project and, although there were several resumptions, construction was never completed.
The layout was maintained and with it an impressive public work, six viaducts (monumental the one that saves the Tagus River) and eighteen tunnels, one of those tunnels, the one located past the La Nava-San Vicente station, is the longest with 800 meters.
Today, this Green Way It allows us to enter the heart of the Mediterranean mountain, crossing an almost virgin landscape, where in spring, the rockroses are the protagonists, filling the route with color and smell.
A perfect route to enjoy a day of hiking.
As if this were not enough, the Green Way It energizes the La Jara region, offers economic alternatives to a territory that needs them and restores hopes that were lost with the closure of the railway project.
A very interesting example is the Pizarrita Station, where we can find unique accommodation: a rehabilitated sleeping car that allows us to stay at the foot of the road and a restaurant car that provides food services and which will be the place chosen to eat in this Greenways Day.
