AUTUMN HIKING IN BIDASOA FROM NOVEMBER 8 TO 10

In the west of the Pyrenean chain, in the mountains that rise above the Bidasoa on the border with France, we find the most interesting region of the Iberian Peninsula due to the fact that it combines conservation of its cultural heritage, magnificent natural scenery and pleasant temperatures throughout. year.

 The forests around Bidasoa, in this autumn time, contrast with the white Basque hamlets. Some of these forests, such as San Juan Xar, are protected due to their uniqueness. And all of them showing their spectacular autumn dresses on these dates.

 As the background theme of the three walking routes We are going to have the traditions in this area: Witchcraft, the peculiar use of pigeon houses in the Cinco Villas and Smuggling on the border with France.

PROGRAMME

NOVEMBER 8:

SAN JUAN XAR – ARANTZA CIRCUS

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Approximate time: 3 hours

  • Accumulated ascent difference: 450 m. 

  • Reference points: San Juan, Lorbido River Mills, Aranibar Palace, Arantza.

  • Route interest:  From the protected natural area of ​​San Juan we will walk along paths that follow the path of the Lorbido River Mills. Once at the old palace of Aranibar we will go up the medieval road to the town of Arantza, one of the most beautiful towns in the region.

NOVEMBER 9:

PEÑAS DE AIAKO HARRIA NATURAL PARK
  • Distance: 16 km. 
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Time: 7 hours
  • Accumulated ascent difference: 650 m. 
  • Reference points: Endarlaza Bridge, Aitzondo waterfall, Bidasoa Greenway

  • Interest of the route: from the same waters of the Bidasoa we are going to ascend to the Aiako Harria massif along the path that smugglers used to reach France. It is the only granite massif in the Western Pyrenees. The proximity of the sea and its rocky character give it a striking wild appearance, as can be seen in the Aitzondo waterfall, which covers a slope of almost 130 m. For centuries, the area was subject to intense mining exploitation, the remains of which we will see, already very scarred by the exuberant oceanic vegetation: iron mines that needed roads and train tracks like the one that will bring us closer to Irun.

    Due to its proximity to the French border, it has been a forced passage for smuggling routes that, riskily crossing the Bidasoa River, entered the paths of this mountain. In addition to the traditional freight traffic, these mountains saw the crossing of air pilots from the Allied side during the Second World War or, more recently, Portuguese emigration in the 60s and 70s in search of a better future in Europe.

    The route concludes at the Ola Cider House, in Irún.

ETXALAR PALOMERAS

  • Difficulty: Low
  • Time: 4 hours
  • Accumulated ascent difference: 450 m. 
  • Reference points: Etxalar, Navarrese forests.
  • Interest of the route: Circular route that allows us to discover the Etxalar pigeon groves, of medieval origin. A very unique tradition that has been preserved due to the great roots of the local population. The route takes us along paths through the mixed deciduous forest to the border muga where the views over the bay and the bucolic livestock landscapes will make us relax.
