Historic garden from the 1954th century, and municipal property since XNUMX. The garden of the Quinta de la Fuente del Berro, is a delight, it has splendid tree specimens, four of them declared unique trees, the monument of the Fuente del Berro, waters that originally supplied the royal house since the 2th century, successive kings secured ownership of the water , despite the changes in ownership of the property. It currently has six doors: 3 to the west that connect the garden with the Fuente del Berro neighborhood, 1 to the north that connect it with the Sancho Dávila park and XNUMX to the south on O'Donnell Street.
A farm next to the Abroñigal stream is the seed of the park. Bernardino Fernández de Velasco, Duke of Frías and Count of Haro, Constable of Castile, took ownership of various plots of land to create a country estate, named Miraflores, Frías or Huerta del Condestable.
In 1630, Philip IV He bought the property for 32 ducats, it contained a house with gardens, orchards, farmland, vineyards and groves made up of a large number of fruit trees, cypresses, poplars and mulberry trees, thanks to the Abroñigal stream.
In 1640 the property was transferred to some Castilian Benedictine monks, after being expelled from the Montserrat monastery due to the uprising against royal power. However, the water in the mouth was reserved for the Crown.
New change in 1703, the estate was purchased by María Trimiño Vázquez de Coronado, advance of Costa Rica. Improvements were made to the water and irrigation pipes, mainly to water the orchards. Years later she left the property to the Obra Pía de los Padres Mercedarios Calzados, although the crown continued to reserve the right to its waters and the maintenance of the fountain. Carlos III He ordered the fountain to be protected with a box, and from then on it began to be called the King's fountain.
The water from the Berro fountain was considered by the Spanish royal family, since Mariana of Austria, as one of the best in Madrid.
Martín Estenoz acquired the property in May 1800, except for the house and the King's fountain, and began to build the wall of the property, the perimeter of which would be the final one. At the end of the XNUMXth century it underwent a radical transformation and became a recreational park called the New Champs Elysées. A few turbulent years and new changes of ownership followed until it was acquired by the Madrid city council.
Inside the garden we can find several statues, that of Alexandr Pushkin, a great Russian poet who, in addition to being a playwright and novelist.
The bronze sculpture, by the Russian artist Oleg Komobt, was a gift from the city of Moscow to the capital of Spain. Spain corresponded with a Statue of Miguel de Cervantes, a replica of the one located in front of the Congress of Deputies. Installed in Friendship Park, Moscow.
Also a set dedicated to Becquer and another statue of Enrique de Iniesta, famous violinist and professor of virtuosity at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid.
Without a doubt we have to highlight those four unique trees, Syrian juniper, unique copy in Madrid. an Atlas cedar and another cedar of Lebanon, also cataloged as unique and a Portuguese cypress included in the catalog. They alone are well worth a visit, but there is much more. I love a large gingo and the atmosphere there, people playing chess, running, reading.
An island of peace in the middle of the bustle of Madrid.
A abrazo.
