The origin of this park dates back to 1966. At that time the northern and southern sections of Príncipe de Vergara (called General Mola at that time) were joined and urbanized. The mayor of Madrid was Carlos Arias Navarro. In the remodeling, space was reserved for a public park. The mayor of West Berlin, Willy Brandt, was scheduled to visit Madrid. It was decided to dedicate a street or a square to the German capital. And this new park in Chamartín, which was very close to the Colegio Alemán, was named after him. A green lung of almost 5 hectares, in which we find a botanical path that allows us to enjoy some very interesting tree species and some magnificent specimens. The park was inaugurated on November 1967, XNUMX.
And it is not its only German reference. Also a statue in honor of Ludwig van Beethoven and another of a bear, symbol of the city of Berlin. The sculpture is the work of Antonio Navarro Santafe, his work is also the pedestal of Bear and the Madroño from the Puerta del Sol. And perhaps, the most interesting surprise of all. In the main fountain we find three pieces of the Berlin Wall, three pieces of the history of Europe and the city of Berlin in Madrid. Coincidentally, it was also November 22th, 1989 years later, in 1990, when the Berlin Wall collapsed, or rather, they tore it down. Ending the division of Berlin and triggering an almost tectonic movement in the heart of Europe. The pieces have been in the Berlin Park since November XNUMX, XNUMX.
Three nines of November united by history, a connection between Madrid and Berlin. We will leave it for another day, which we promise will be soon as those three pieces of wall arrived in Madrid, we believe that it is worth dedicating some time to it. 365 days in Madrid to tell in detail such a unique trip. We will only advance two things, a journalist Manuel Romero was the key protagonist of the whole thing and Rodriguez Sahagun He was the mayor of Madrid at that time.
In the park we can also see the monument to Alvaro Iglesias Sánchez, Carranza's hero, inaugurated in 1982, the bust honors this young man who died after saving three people in a fire that occurred that same year on Carranza Street in Madrid.
As you see, a lot to see in the berlin park, and at this time of year, it starts to look spectacular.
A abrazo.
