Madrid_Rio_by_bikeMadrid River It was born in 2011 although its gestation began much earlier, with the burial of the M-30. A large linear park along the Manzanares River, from the vicinity of the King's Bridge to the South Nude where it connects with the Manzanares Linear Park.
There are 8 kilometers of green spaces that give access to the six large gardens of the park: Aniceto Marinas Gardens, Virgen del Puerto Gardens, Lower Gardens of the Segovia Bridge, Toledo Bridge Gardens, Arganzuela Park and Matadero. Some areas have also been set up on Avenida de Portugal, and the Huerta de la Partida, a memory of the atmosphere of an orchard full of fruit trees from the XNUMXth century.
A project that places us in the wake of other major European capitals such as Berlin, London or Paris, which has meant the recovery of the Manzanares River and thousands of square meters of public space for the people of Madrid.
It is clear that it was a necessity, even before it was inaugurated it was already used massively by the people of Madrid, it was a latent demand, which occupied as its own the public space that we needed so much.
It has great relevance to water, it is present in the river, the ornamental fountains and river ponds along the entire route: rehabilitated ornamental fountain in front of the Casa de Vargas, four ponds on the Segovia Bridge, four fountains in the gardens of Virgen del Puerto and ten ornamental fountains and the urban beach of Arganzuela Park.
The new bridges are very relevant: Arganzuela designed by Dominique Perrault, the twin Bridges of Matadero and Invernadero with their vaults decorated with mosaics by Daniel Canogar, the Oblique Bridge; or the recovery of the seven river dams and the historic bridges of the King, of Segovia or Toledo, as well as the new bridge that has allowed it to connect with the Manzanares linear park.
Rivers have always been means of communication, they have structured the landscape and that is what Madrid Río has achieved, recovering the Manzanares as the backbone.

Unite Matadero with the Casa de Campo or the Royal Palace, see birds in the river, enjoy sunny days in winter... Madrid Río is for all that and more.
Not everything is fantastic, of course, there is a lot of criticism about how the spaces have been distributed, not having segregated differentiated spaces for cyclists and walkers, but we still love Madrid Río. We have to understand it as a space for everyone and for everyone: walkers, cyclists, skaters, families with strollers, children, dogs that walk their owners on a leash, strollers of various types and in recent times also, the electric bikes from BiciMad and We believe that this is a reflection of what Madrid has always been and should be, a space open to everyone.
For us, Madrid Río is the starting point for many of our bicycle routes through Madrid, a space to learn to ride a bicycle in our bicycle school and one of the catalysts for Madrid to have become a much better city for bicycles and for all. And for you? What does Madrid Río mean?
A abrazo.
