The Climate Route

The Climate Route is a tool for climate action, environmental education, responsible tourism and cooperation.

The aim is to develop guided physical-conceptual itineraries that address the climate emergency, through training and recreational routes and activities, in municipalities and territories with themes related to the climate emergency. These initiatives allow us to understand the causes, understand the connections and impacts, promoting individual and collective action towards the search for local solutions.

Ultimately, the Climate Route empowers and stimulates critical thinking, promoting social mobilization, direct democracy, local economies of well-being, nature-based solutions (NbS), regenerative cultures and art.

Rutas Pangea joined the Climate Route initiative that was born in Malaga, promoted by three complementary entities fully committed to the cause: Social Climate, ExploraMalaga and Líbero.

Later, we, Rutas Pangea, joined forces in Madrid through a collaborative network of cities/municipalities and with the help of Aethnic in Barcelona and La Ciclería in Zaragoza.

The Climate Route project received a grant in the first call for proposals from the Experiences programme of the State Secretariat for Tourism, funded by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism.

This project brings together Aethnic, Low Carbon Economy, Rutas Pangea and Social Climate in the mission of developing, promoting and replicating a tool for climate action, environmental education, responsible tourism and cooperation.

The Climate Route in Madrid.

In Madrid, our route is based on the axis of the Manzanares River, our guiding thread. We travel by bicycle. The river accompanies us over the oldest bridges in Madrid, the one in Segovia and the one in Toledo. This allows us to talk about how Madrid was born and grew.

The Casa de Campo serves as a viewing point for the city and to explain its function as a green lung. The importance of trees for the city and to introduce one of the key themes of the route, air pollution and how the causes contribute to climate change.

During the tour we will learn about some proposals in Madrid that contribute to minimising these impacts and raising awareness on the path to a change of model: organic community gardens, zero-kilometre products, citizen participation initiatives...

The Climate Routes seek to raise awareness about the global problem of climate change and to make visible proposals that are already in the process of changing the model.
