La church of the sacrament It belonged to the old convent of the Santísimo Sacramento of Bernardas Cistercian nuns that was founded in 1615 by Don Cristóbal de Sandoval y Rojas, Duke of Uceda and Prime Minister of Philip III, on some houses attached to his palace on Calle Mayor, today General Captaincy and Council of State, we already talked about this convent when referring to the Nuns Garden, this garden occupied the old patio of the convent. The church is located on Sacramento Street, next to the Madrid General Captaincy building.

The church was designed in the shape of a Latin cross, by the architect Juan Gomez Mora, in the year 1615. The construction was a very long undertaking. Work began in 1671, half a century after the convent was founded; It took 73 years to complete the construction, finishing in 1744. It was consecrated to the Blessed Sacrament.

The project was carried out by three architects; the jesuit friar Francis Baptist, Manuel del Olmo y Bartolome Hurtado García, the latter was the one who started the works, directing them until his death in 1698. Later, he took charge of the works, Andres Esteban until its completion in 1744.

It is a clear example of a Madrid baroque church. It has a Latin cross plan, with a single nave, and covered by a half-barrel vault. The façade built in granite, with three arches and a bas-relief above the main entrance that represents Saint Benedict and Saint Bernard adoring the Blessed Sacrament is very interesting.

As we already said when talking about the Huerto de las Monjas, the convent was partially demolished during the Spanish Civil War. Later rebuilt, it was demolished in the 70s to build an apartment block, saving only the church. This was acquired by the Ministry of Defense in 1979 to house the Military Archbishop's Church of the I Military Region, a function that continues to be performed today, as the Cathedral Church of the Armed Forces.
