They say the Church of San Lorenzo It occupies the site where the synagogue was located, it communicated with the Plaza de Lavapiés through Sinagoga Street, which today is called de la Fe. However, this information is not confirmed. The Jews certainly lived in other neighborhoods until the end of the 15th century when they were expelled by the Catholic kings. The Lavapiés area was outside the Christian wall and at that time the area was sparsely populated.

The church was consecrated on September 8, 1670. It was a small church with a single nave and a simple façade, highlighting the statue of San Lorenzo in a niche above the doorway.

In June 1851 it suffered a fire that affected a large part of the building. It was later restored. On July 20, 1936 at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War was totally destroyed.

The architects Sixtus y Antonio Cámara Niño They built the church again, they started in 1942. They did not follow the original model, the result is what we see today. It was inaugurated again on August 9, 1950.
