One of the jewels that the Sierra de Guadarrama jealously guards is the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, it was the residence of King Philip II and one of the masterpieces of the Spanish Renaissance. Today it remains one of the most impressive and visited royal sites in Spain, included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
