The Colombian painter and sculptor, Fernando Botero, was born in Medellín, on April 19, 1932. He was a very precocious artist, at the age of 19 he had his first individual exhibition. He soon begins to win awards that give him recognition and opportunities to continue creating.
En Madrid We have three of his works, in bronze, distributed throughout the city. In the Plaza de Colón, on the Paseo de Recoletos, we find “The Woman in the Mirror”. In the Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz on Paseo de la Castellana we can see "Hand" and in terminal 1 of the Barajas airport, we meet “The Rapture of Europe”.
Woman with Mirror, is one of the works that the Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero gave to the city of Madrid, after the great reception of his exhibition. «Botero in Madrid», in the spring of 1994.
Telefónica bought "La Mano" for seventy million pesetas and later transferred it to Madrid. The property continues to belong to the telephone company. It is located in front of the Museum of Natural Sciences and it is another example of Botero's taste for large volumes.
The Rapture of Europe was acquired by the Spanish Airports and Air Navigation Society (Aena) to place it in the Baraja's airport, today Adolfo Suárez. He acquired two other works for the Prat airport in Barcelona and Sant Joan airport in Palma.
His very personal style does not leave anyone indifferent, large works, massive (The Hand, weighs 500 kilos) and very sensual, they capture the attention of the public who sees them, they do not leave anyone indifferent.
A abrazo.
