51:45 – Last Sunday morning, while cycling through Portugal I received a call from Xavier Alonso, Cheroky and his tone did not bode well, direct as he always is, he told me that he brought bad news, it's Román. An avalanche took him away on Saturday in the Alps.
A blow, a sharp blow that leaves you almost speechless, not knowing what to say, but what was it like? where? While emotions rush and memories come rushing from all corners of the brain.
Roman Bascuñana, mountain guide, mountaineer, skier, mountain biker, whatever it is about mountains, because the mountains were his life and he left it in it.
Román and I went to the institute together many years ago, the Manuel Azaña in Getafe, and there we rode together with other classmates and some enthusiastic teachers, the Institute's Mountain and Caving Group.
The Sierra de Madrid became our territory, La Najarra, El Yelmo, Peñalara, caves in the center of the peninsula like La Galiana or Las Majadillas, soon the Pyrenees arrived. I will always remember Román on a long weekend in October 1989 in Ordesa, we had an incredible kick and Román was always there with his smile and his skinny, indefatigable cigarette. It was clear that he was made of a different material, when all the rest of us were exhausted and only saw that the darkness of the night was going to catch us, he saw a new path along which to continue our journey.
High school ended and our paths separated, but only a little. We started early with Pangea Routes and he was a safe bet as a guide, our first trip together in this stage was the Portuguese Algarve, then came Sierra Espuña, Cabo de Gata, many Caminos de Santiago and several Magic Tours, a delicious crazy invention of Joaquin Jimenez, father of the Spanish Greenways which consisted of a return to Spain in 15 days, cycling along the Green Routes throughout the country.
Many hours shared, on a bike, in a van, nights in a bivouac, in a hostel, in cheap hostels, because we appreciated a good dinner and a few beers more than a bed.
With Román we launched into the Himalayas, only he could convince us that it was possible to organize bicycle trips in the Himalayas, so in 1997 we created a Manalí Leh and a Spiti Valley in 1998.
Román's bike at that time was a GT Karakoram, it couldn't have any other name, right?
On the trip to prepare for Manali Leh, Román met in India with Miguel Angel Diaz who was making the bike trip that he later told us in his fantastic book about the Alcarria to the Himalayas.
Román had something special, he transmitted light, security, you knew that going with him everything would be easier.
The years passed. Román was clear that the bike was not enough for his passion for the mountains, he parked the bike and held on to the ice ax and skis. The summits were his thing and he dedicated himself fully to them. More than 30 expeditions, the Himalayas, Peru, Bolivia, Patagonia, Nepal, Pamir, the Atlas, mountains around the world that he loved more than anything in the world.
And he stayed there, doing what they liked most, skiing among the largest glaciers in the Alps, and he left as he always said with, "I'm leaving, goodbye." Without further ado, and it has left us all desolate without him. We miss you.
