"The Danube is the origin of a Europe, of the meeting along the river of great currents that can help us conceive an existence above national identities". The words of Skinny They praise this "river-road" link and border between so many peoples throughout history. Not in vain on our tour we will be able to visit 10 different countries.

Magris, whose Danube story helped many Europeans discover the Mitteleuropa articulated around the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which had been half-hidden behind the Iron Curtain with the division of Europe after World War II, now contemplates with the perspective that the step takes 20 years ago what happened in that space to which, as a Trentino, he fully belongs. "I was very lucky to be able to travel through Eastern Europe for four years during a period of relative tranquility, between 1982 and 1986; if that had not been the case, in 1989 [when the collapse of the Soviet bloc occurred] I would not have been able to descend to the different strata of history, discovering things, in themselves unimportant, but revealing. This experience was key to understanding what happened next, because when experiencing these great historical events it is easy to remain only on the surface.

The route runs mostly near the Danube River and offers a flat route, without any type of technical or physical difficulty. In the first three weeks, much of the route runs along bike paths and some paths and small roads. It is the most developed Europe and where bicycle tourism is an activity with a lot of tradition. From Budapest we approach another Europe, where cycling routes are less developed and we pedal more on paths, roads and small sections of trail. A different Europe, to be discovered with countries that hold great surprises like Serbia or Romania. Every week there are times for sightseeing or other activities. There is the possibility of traveling some sections by train, boat or ferry.

Our route is part of the euroveil 6, that we will pedal this summer also on the section that runs through the Castles of the Loire River in France.
