A day like today, October 2, but in the year 1910, the king Alfonso XIII inaugurated the ritz hotel. In 2010 it was already a centenary hotel, today it turns 105 years old, congratulations. The place where it was built had been part of the Buen Retiro gardens, but at the time it was a plot of land, with some barracks of the Circo Hipódromo and the gardens of the old Tivoli Theater. The project to build a hotel of these characteristics was a personal endeavor of the King himself, after visiting great hotels on his travels through Europe that became symbols of the city. The palace in Belle Epoque style was designed in 1908 by the French architect Charles Frederic Mewes and built under the direction of the Spanish Luis de Landecho between 1908 and 1910. It was one of the first buildings in Madrid in which reinforced concrete was used. The most exclusive Spanish and foreign companies of the time were hired to decorate the hotel. The carpets of the Real tapestry factory, the tablecloths were ordered from Irish firms, the furniture was ordered from Lissarraga and Sobrinos, the mirrors to Pereanton. The tableware Limoges and the house's English silver cutlery The Goldsmiths. The famous hotelier César Ritz, from whom it took its name, participated in the design and construction, but he could not take charge of the management of the hotel himself due to his health problems.

The hotel has gone through different events in its long history, moments of decline and changes of ownership. Currently the hotel is managed by the exclusive Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group chain, which has luxury hotels around the world.
