The Madrid Casino (6)In June 1902, in a session held in the Hall of The Equitable A fifth transfer of the society to its own building, the social club, is decided. Madrid Casino. The project is promoted through the purchase of premises Veloz-Club on Alcalá Street, numbers 13 and 15. An international competition was organized for the presentation of architectural projects in 1903.

It is the era of late ecleticism with medieval remnants and mixtures of French architectural style (French neo-baroque). The Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 created the trends. The jury that is in charge of the proposals is a group of experts from the neighboring Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and among whom are: Jose Echegaray, Agustín Querol y Antonio Canovas y Vallejo.

Of the twenty-seven projects submitted to the competition, that of the French architect Guillaume Tronchet It is the one that the jury likes the most. However, he is rejected due to criticism from some partners for the image of Spain that Tronchet had represented in the pavilions of the Paris Exhibition (titled La Belle Meuniére).

The competition is declared void and the jury decides to buy the projects Antonio Palacios, Urioste (introducer of the Neoplateresque style), Manuel Martinez, the Parisian family of architects Le Farge, Tomás Gómez-Acebo and Tronchet himself. With this acquisition, Le Farge (L. Farge and P. Farge, father and son) are in charge of merging the projects, choosing the best of each of the styles.

The final project was signed by the architect Luis Esteve, and officially presented in 1905. The fusion of projects fundamentally includes the contributions of Farge and Acebo. Finally, the building is a clear example of the typical style of Madrid eclecticism of the early XNUMXth century.

The construction of the Casino was directed by the architect and casino partner Jose Lopez Sallaberry. The work on the building was completed on September 29, 1910.

In 1940 the building was completely restored from the wounds of the war and the Republican period, a commemorative tablet of the 150 members killed during the war was incorporated in one of the hallways.

Today it continues with its activities for members and some open to the general public, in addition to a restaurant that offers wonderful lunches and dinners, associated with the names of two great chefs, Ferran Adria y Paco Roncero. Its summer terrace is a spectacular place.

A abrazo.
