Located on Paseo de Recoletos 17 on the corner of Prim Street, an elegant building that tells us about the historical moment that Madrid was experiencing at the time of its construction in 1869.
In 1855, the Credit Societies Law of 1855 was enacted. From that moment on, various financial and credit entities began to be created in Madrid. His main focus of attention at that time was the development of the railway. Improvements in the media were an unstoppable race. That same year, the Railway Law was approved and the construction of a national network was proposed. The capital comes mainly from foreign groups, as we already said when talking about the Atocha stations and the North with the Péreire brothers and the Rothschild bank.
All companies wanted to have their headquarters in Madrid. This is what happened with the Furniture Credit Society. He chose some land that had been part of the old orchard that the General of Artillery Juan Brancacho owned on the Paseo de Recollects.
Taking charge of the opening works on Calle de las Salesas, with a project by the architect Isidro Llanos. It had to align the Paseo de Recoletos and the streets of Almirante and Prim, formerly called del Sauco.
The City Council was not convinced by the Llanos project and an independent appraiser was in charge of establishing the alignments of the plot. In 1869, Severiano Sainz de Lastra (who we remember, who together with Eduardo de Ardaro, built the Bank of Spain building, located in Plaza de Cibeles) built the building, consisting of a street plan and two floors. The most common architectural aesthetic of the Elizabethan period.
Later and in successive renovations, the building has been modified. One more floor was added to the building, a door was opened in the chamfer. Much later, in the eighties of the 20th century, with the building being property of the Ministry of the Navy, it was rehabilitated.
A abrazo.
