We are facing one of the most significant works of Miguel Fisac On the banks of Manzanares river, where we must mention the great work of the engineer Eduardo Torroja, we talk about Hydrographic Studies Center.
In 1960 Miguel Fisac Serna was commissioned to build a new building that was to house two organizations: the Center for Hydrographic Studies and the Hydraulics Laboratory. Three years later he concludes a project that has become a symbol of the architecture of the 60s in Madrid and Spain.
Fisac designed two buildings, joined by a corridor. A main core with a seven-story tower and three warehouses for rehearsals, while in the secondary we find a two-story building.
The Hydrographic Studies Center building is a reference of Spanish Architecture from the 60s and is constantly visited by groups of professionals and students from all over the world. The most notable part of the set is the model warehouse, which constituted an important challenge, which Fisac himself defined as his “greatest structural challenge” up to that point in his career and where he had the great contribution of Torroja. They created an open space, which received sunlight from above, which guaranteed uniform lighting with a lintel roof with beams that were formed by pieces of concrete joined together. They were the so-called “bone beams”, similar to the bone structures of animals, which at the same time allowed the 22-meter ship to be structurally resolved, the indirect natural light necessary to carry out the tests and the evacuation of water from the roof. .
However, this design was not very liked by the neighbors and it was always a highly discussed work.
A abrazo.
