We propose a bike trip to get to know the International Tagus and the lands of Alcántara. The origin of the name Alcántara comes from Arabic and means “the bridge”. When the Arabs came here and found this wonderful bridge, they could not give it another name. Built almost two millennia ago, “it will last as long as the world lasts”… that is what its builder Cayo Julio Lacer recorded «Pontemperpetui mansurum in saecula mundi» in his work. However, these lands on the banks of the great Tagus River have been inhabited for millennia.

Part of our route, through the south of Salamanca, will run along the route of the Eurovelo 1 to then continue along the old railway route from Palazuelo to Astorga recovered as the Vía de la Plata Natural Trail that takes us through the Ambroz Valley to the outskirts of Plasencia.

The route that Alfonso II the Chaste followed to visit the newly discovered tomb of the Apostle Santiago in the 9th century. Our itinerary proposal adjusts to the Path that Alfonso II traveled. From Oviedo, we will cross all the councils of western Asturias: Las Regueras, Grado, Salas, Tineo, Pola de Allande and Grandas de Salime. We will reach Lugo through Puerto del Acebo and connect with the French Way in Palas de Rei; Santiago and the Plaza del Obradoiro are very close.
